Sun Protective UPF: Ultraviolent Protection Factor UPF is used to rate the sun protectiveness of a fabric. Unlike SPF, UPF applies to both UVA and UVB rays. Ratings run from UPF 5-50, with 8 being the rating for an average white t-shirt. Constant Protection With sun protective clothing, as long as the fabric covers your skin you are protected all day long. The more intense the sun, the higher the rating you should wear, especially if you will be out for an extended period of time. Higher Rating, Safer Skin A cotton t-shirt is rated between UPF 5-8, meaning it allows up to 20% of UV radiation to reach skin. According to the UPF standard, no rating below 15 can be called 'sun protective'. Read more
This is the fifth Exofficio Air Strip shirt I have bought, but I am thinking it will be the last... For years, this model was the perfect travel shirt for me, as a photographer.. Loose fitting for comfort and LARGE pockets to carry all my stuff in, mainly the zippered security pocket, which would hold my wallet and my passport.. The pockets on the original shirt measured 6 inches wide and 7 inches tall.. Really nice size for people like me.. For me, it was a sturdy work and travel shirt, not a fashion statement.. My old ones were getting a lot of miles on them.. Three of them did five international trips last year.. Life was good.. But, now, sadly Exofficio has KILLED the shirt.. Well, it is not really dead, but it is severely messed up.. Now the shirt is smaller, and the pockets measure 5 inches wide and 6 inches tall.. This is not big enough to put my stuff in anymore.. This new shirt that I have will stay here with me, can wear it around town to go grocery shopping and the like, but it is no good for travel anymore.. If they were going to do anything to the shirt to improve it, they would have put TWO security pocket on it instead of the one... Sometimes the crazy design people screw things up.. Too bad they do not actually have to use the stuff they design. And, if you think a little change does not affect things, think about this.. I was raised on a ranch, of sorts. We raised cattle. My dad bought a huge new bull for our herd of cows.. Things were going really good until one time the bull apparently tried to get into another pasture by going through a pasture fence.. The result was that he messed up his reproductive organ in the process.. He still looked like a bull, from a distance. And, if you did not know anything about ranching you would still think he had future as a good looking animal, but, that was not to be.. Even though he looked the same, or almost the same, the real working part of the bull was no longer useful.. So, what happened to him??? He ended up as hamburger meat... And, I think that the Exofficio Air Strip Shirt has the same future ahead of it.. Buying the new design is like buying that bull that lost his ability to do his job....I generally sweat a ton once I go to a hot and/or humid location overseas. So when I took this to Southeast Asia in the middle of the hot season, I expected it wouldn't fair quite well.To my surprise, this was the best shirt for lightweight hot weather wear that I've ever traveled with. I took this all over Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia at temperatures well above comfort, and never felt terrible. Much like the Give-N-Go Boxers, the shirt holds up well with sustained travel and minimal washing without giving off much odor. Highly recommend for a light but professional looking travel shirt in hot weather locations where sun protection is needed. This is my favorite shirt. I'm 6'3", 250lbs and very slightly pear shaped; "thanks for the great genetics Mom". Because of that I wear XL in a regular fit and XXL in a slim fit. I thought I read where this was a slim fit so I ordered a 2X, but based on other reviews I must have gotten the old version, because it fit huge on me and the pockets seem ginormous. I ended up shrinking this by washing it washing it in hot water, and drying with a very hot iron. It shrank enough to were I don't look like I'm in a Moo Moo, but it's still kind of big on me.Other than that, this is absolutely my favorite shirt. It feels like wearing air. It has hardly any weight to it, and breathes like a fat kid in gym class (I would know). I also love being able to button up my sleeve rolls, and having the extra hidden color to pop up when I'm in the sun.I'll be ordering another one soon, but will give the 1X a shot.My only issue with these shirts are they are a bit long, I wish they were a bit shorter (I'm 5'8") .Lg. fits me best around the shoulders/arms but is too long for "attractive dress" look around town untucked, med. is a bit tight up top, but better untucked look wise. If you tuck shirts in no issues.I really like Air Strip shirts and have worn them for several years. I did not give five stars only because it is a much brighter yellow than pictured. The vents permit air to flow easily into the shirt. Good for summer days to shield from the sun and still remain cool. Wear this shirt on a cool windy day and you will definitely notice the vents.Unfortunately this is not the Exofficio shirt of past. The current shirt material was so thin I felt like I was wearing a cheap pillow case; I returned it.I really like this shirt. The fit is as expected - I'm a 15 1/2-34/35 slim fit and I ordered a medium. It is roomy enough to move freely but not boxy or baggy. It looks good and is functional. Unlike a cotton shirt, it has some give, and it wicks away moisture rather than getting soggy. It's also very versatile. In cooler weather, you can wear an undershirt; in hot weather not, and it performs perfectly either way. The side and back vents are a big plus in hot weather. On a recent safari tip I wore it all the time, and each night I was able to wash the dust out in the sink and it was dry by morning.I looked at a bunch of shirts like this before buying this one, and I'm very pleased with my choice.I haven't actually worn this on a trip yet, so this review is based on first impressions. I've owned ExOfficio Give-N-Go t-shirts and briefs for a long time, and love 'em a lot. This is the first ExOfficio that's not their "Give-N-Go" fabric so I was a little apprehensive. Turns out to be an awesome fabric that I can see would be great in humid climes. The vents under the arms and across the back are well-done and look very functional. I like the ability to roll up the long sleeves (as pictured). I'm a slender 5' 9" with slightly broad shoulders, and I found the fit a teeny bit small. I think the next size would be too big, though. If my opinion changes after actually using them on my next trip, I'll update this review. If we get any hot weather this year I can see myself wearing this all the time. I know some reviewers would prefer the older shirts that had a good amount of cotton mixed with man-made fibres, which I would agree with because you could at least iron the shirt. It's a shame that it arrives crumpled and obviously you can't use the iron (unlessyou want it to melt) So at the moment it gets washed and then hung to dry in the bathroom, it doesn't do a bad job of getting most creases out. However, even with all man-made fibres I very much like the shirt. Its light, fits me a treat and is very comfortable. I can see myself on the Hampshire rivers utilising all of its specs. I got this at a very reasonable price and will try to get some other colours. The shirt works really well on a 8 km hike up to the base of a glacier, keeping the sun off of me and keeping my body temperature just right. The delivery and packaging were done well also.I love these shirts, perfect for travel and everyday use. I already owned a half dozen in various colours, that are at least 10 years old and still going strong. They made an improvement since I last bought them: the pockets now have two velcro closures, one at each side, instead of the single in the middle. This eliminates the pocket corner "curl". Well done!BuenoExcellent quality !!! Expensive but cheaper to purchase ‘on line’ than in the shop. Would have liked a few more light colour choices
