I’ve been insisting these in homes for over a decade. The manufacturer themselves state that the catalyst/bulb assembly should be replaced every two years due to the potency, and effectiveness of the assembly taking a steep nosedive at the two year mark. It seems that some were not aware of this. Either because the installing contractor did not communicate this information, or a homeowner installed the product without performing due diligence regarding the frequency of the catalyst/bulb assembly requiring replacement. In addition, this product does require a dedicated 40 VA transformer, as the transformer in most systems(with the exception of certain Trane models) are only able to handle the requirement VA of the controls within the system. This is because it provides the 24 VAC power to the controls in the outdoor unit, as well as the controls in the interior unit. If a dedicated transformer is not used, it can shorten the life of the catalyst/bulb assembly, and cause electrical damage to the solid state controls in the exterior part of the product. I repeat, this is not something you install into your duct work, and magically lasts forever because of unicorns, or faeries. All of the manufacturer documentation states that the catalyst/bulb assembly requires replacement at the two year mark. Otherwise you just have a really cool nightlight in your duct work. I’m allergic to certain types of mold, and fungus. My eldest son has allergenic asthma, and my wife has severe allergies that cause her to look as if she just has her freshman appearance in bare knuckle boxing. This product does work. One important piece of advice to anyone that owns one, or that is having one installed, is to allow the fan to run all the time. That way it’s constantly purifying the air, instead of wherever you’re heating/cooling cycles on, or off. Also, invest in a media filter(AprilAire, Honeywell, Trion AirBear), or electronic air filter(AprilAire 5000). That way you’re removing a large amount of particulate, and certain biological contaminants prior to the air reaching the Air Scrubber. A whole home humidifier(AprilAire 400, 600, 700, or 800) is also an important part of indoor air quality depending on the surrounding environment where you live, a certain areas of the United States rarely use heating, our experience low relative humidity. Those areas that do have a normal heating season will experience a lack of relative humidity due to the expansion of the air(once heated) capability to hold a larger amount of moisture. I.E. previously 68 degree air at 50% humidity, when heated to a hypothetical 100 degree air would have a significantly lower relative humidity closer to 15%-20%. When air is heated it has a larger capacity to hold moisture. Imagine a ten car parking lot with five parked cars, which is equivalent to 50% capacity. Then that same parking lot expanding to the capacity to hold twenty cars with the same amount of parked vehicles. Now, the occupied capacity has lowered to 25%. This is an analogy to the effect on relative humidity once the air is heated. Just a in physics, colder objects tend to have tightly packed molecules. Warmer objects will have a larger free area in between the molecules.I apologize for the lengthy review, but indoor air quality isn’t just a with fix where you rely on only one product to affect the entirety of the conditioned space. I did forget to mention that each system within your home should have one installed in it. Otherwise, it will only be effective for that one zone. This product does exactly what it says, but do not forget to do your research on what products are applicable, in series with each other, to create the indoor air quality you are trying to create.
